06-23-2010 - Passing of Phil McCollum
SALEM-James Phillip McCollum, 68, of 1152 Jones Drive, Salem, Ohio died at 4:51 p.m. on Monday, June 21, 2010, at his home following a six-month illness.
He was born Oct. 19, 1941, in Canonsburg, Pa., the son of the late James A. and Florence (Hott) McCollum.
Before his retirement, Mr. McCollum had been employed with the city of Salem in the Waste Water Treatment Plant for 30 years. He was a 1959 graduate of Salem High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Salem V.F.W. Post 892, Salem AMVETS Post 45, Leetonia American Legion Post 131, 40 and 8 Club in Columbiana and a former member of the Salem Independent Hose Club. Phil was very active with the Salem V.F.W Post 892 and Salem AMVETS Post 45 Honor Guard and was past president of the USS Markab Association.
His wife, Ida Anne (Turri) McCollum, whom he married Jan. 26, 1961, survives him, along with three sons, Michael James McCollum of Massillon, Douglas Patrick McCollum of Salem and Jeffery Alan McCollum of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Dennis Alan McCollum of Salem; and a granddaughter, Brittney McCollum of Columbus.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio, with Terry Kirsch officiating.
The Salem V.F.W. Post 892 and the Salem AMVETS Post 45 Burial Group will provide full military honors at the cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
